Hello drama family!
The next drama I want to just gush over with you is actually Chinese this time.

Title: Make A Wish
Apps: IQIYI
Release Year: 2021
Region: China
Episode Count: 24
Make A Wish was one of my more recent drama experiences. I managed to find the IQIYI app and it opened up a whole new world of dramas for me, several of which are not on other apps that I use. Also, this particular drama is a VIP drama on the app, so you will need a subscription with IQIYI in order to watch this one.
Plot: This is the story of an introverted man who runs a book store as well as loves feeding the stray cats throughout the neighborhood. He has one best friend while mostly just keeping to himself, his books, and the cats. One day, he rescues a cat from imminent danger and it turns out that she is no ordinary cat. This cat is actually from an alternate dimension known as Meow Planet and she can turn into a human. She is now bound to this quiet man and cannot return home to her dimension until he makes a wish. This unlikely duo experiences a lot of ups and downs in this comedic romance that is mixed with drama, intrigue, and a lot of fantasy.
So, Make A Wish was a drama I was really unsure about watching. I have seen other dramas about animals turning into people and vice versa before. Some I have finished, some I haven't. They just haven't really been my cup of tea. Maybe it was that I didn't find the right one. I decided to take a chance at watching Make A Wish while unsure of what I may be getting myself into. I can't say I was disappointed. It was a humorous romp through the lives of a cat girl and the man that ended up becoming roommates with her. It was easy going for the most part, but definitely included its fair share of drama and mystery. There were even hints of crime drama added in.
The actors and actresses are really to be credited for the characters that they developed on screen. The characters were ones that you laughed with, felt for, and wanted to know more about. So, let's take a look at a couple of the characters first.
Our ML is named Chi Yan and played by Ren You Lun. Chi Yan is an introverted man that is very attached to the bookstore that he owns. He enjoys solitude and feeding the stray cats around his neighborhood. You could even say he would rather be friends with the cats than with people. He does have relationships with people around him, but they are limited to an extrovert who decided to make Chi Yan his friend and a woman he knew from high school.
Our FL is named Xiao Xiu played by Gia Ge. Xiao Xiu is a cat from the Meow Planet who has found herself in the human world. She is very naïve to the ways of humans when she first arrives, displaying cat-like behaviors even when she is in human form. In a lot of ways, she is a very outgoing and curious character, definitely the opposite of our ML. She forms an unlikely bond with Chi Yan whenever he saves her and she becomes bound to him until he makes a wish. Gia Ge played Xiao Xiu excellently. I fully think that she made an excellent cat to human because of the way she looks and how well she acted. She was definitely a character I became attached to and I enjoyed her character development thoroughly.
Throughout the series, there are a lot of moments that you will find yourself laughing at almost uncontrollably. I really enjoyed the humor that was displayed between Chi Yan and Xiao Xiu as they tried to live with one another despite their major differences. The antics that they get themselves into really helped develop their relationship. Not only were there funny moments, but there were also serious and heartwarming ones as well.
I can definitely say, there are lessons to be learned from this particular series thanks to how they handled the pasts of the characters as well as the hardships they ended up going through. Themes include creating new relationships, dealing with phobias, death and grieving, as well as bullying. It displayed how the characters dealt with these issues originally, as well as how they overcame their hardships. Make A Wish also had some crime style drama involved as well, but I feel like delving into the details too much would provide spoilers.
If you like funny, heartwarming dramas, but also take pleasure in drama, mystery, and science fiction then this is probably a drama you would want to watch. I have watched all sorts of dramas that fall into these individual categories, or some that mix and match, but this one did a really good job of incorporating each genre into a single drama. I laughed a lot, I would sit on the edge of my seat during certain scenes, and I found myself rooting for certain characters and relationships.
Now, there are things I did dislike. One of them was the inclusion of a trope I am not fond of and that happens to be memory loss. There are plenty of dramas that feature this, some expand upon this idea for several episodes and some do not, it's just a trope that I wish either wasn’t used or was used very little. But, that's just my personal opinion. I didn't really anticipate characters experiencing memory loss at a certain point, so it did catch me a little off guard, but I get where they were going with it. There is also one villain in particular I wish they would have expanded upon more regarding his backstory. I am someone who enjoys getting to learn about the characters and their pasts. To me, it helps me understand the character and why they are the way they are in the series. I would've loved to learn more about the main villain, but what they do give you satisfies the information necessary for the story.
Make A Wish was an unexpectedly good drama. I definitely found it to be a pleasant surprise. It also made me wish Meow Planet was real to a certain extent, mostly because I think it would be cool if my cat could turn into a person. That probably seems a little weird, though.
Drama Mama Rating: 8/10 (meow)
